90% of IT execs concerned digital infrastructure will suffer due to 'cyber war'

Many IT security professionals –– 88 percent –– believe the world is in a state of cyber war, according to machine identity protection provider Venafi.

Venafi conducted a survey of 485 IT security professionals who attended the RSA Conference 2020. Leaders were asked about the rise of cyberattacks and the consequences of these attacks.

Nearly all (90 percent) said they were concerned that digital infrastructure will suffer the most damage as a result of the rise in cyberattacks. The most vulnerable organizations are those undergoing rapid digital transformation.

Sixty percent of respondents said water, healthcare and transportation are equally vulnerable to cyberattacks. With 12 percent indicating healthcare was the most vulnerable.

“Security professionals are under constant siege from very sophisticated threat actors targeting government, military and private organizations,” said Kevin Bocek, vice president of security strategy and threat intelligence at Venafi. “Powerful attack methods, like establishing backdoors with machine identities, are now available as commodity malware, making it harder for security professionals to defend against these attacks.”
