45% of businesses unknowingly experience a cyberattack: 4 survey insights

Nearly half of business owners struck with hacking, phishing or other cyberattacks indicated they didn't realize their experience counted as a "cyberattack," according to a survey from Nationwide.

For the survey, the insurance giant polled more than 1,000 U.S. business owners on their cyber perceptions and practices.

Here are four survey insights.

1. Only 13 percent of business owners indicated their company was the victim of a cyberattack, but that number jumped to 58 percent after respondents were provided with a list of types of cyberattacks.

2. Seventy-six percent of business owners think cyberattacks are unlikely to affect their company.

3. A majority of business owners (57 percent) do not have a dedicated employee or vendor monitoring cyberattacks — 37 percent cite cost as a reason for not monitoring cyberattacks. Another 34 percent do not believe they will be the target of an attack.

4. Forty-one percent of business owners believe cyberattacks occur more frequently in larger businesses than smaller businesses.
