UnitedHealth CEO sees 22% jump in 2016 compensation

Stephen Hemsley, CEO of Minnetonka, Minn.-based UnitedHealth Group, reported total compensation of $17.8 million for 2016, up roughly 22 percent from $14.5 million in 2015.

Mr. Hemsley’s base salary was $1.3 million in 2016, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Mr. Hemsley experienced the highest jump in yearly compensation among the company’s executive team. David Wichmann, president of UnitedHealth, saw his 2016 compensation increase 6 percent to $12.3 million, and Larry Renfro, vice chairman and CEO of Optum, also saw a 6 percent year-over-year increase in compensation to $12.3 million in 2016.
