The rise of compensation by residency year: 8 statistics

Average resident salaries start at $51,000 during the first year after medical school and grow to $66,000 in the eighth year post-MD, according to the Medscape Residents Salary & Debt Report 2014.

Medscape surveyed more than 1,200 residents from June 20 through July 7. All participants were enrolled in U.S. medical resident programs. Here are the average residency salaries for each of the eight years following medical school.

  • First year: $51,000
  • Second year:  $52,000
  • Third year: $54,000
  • Fourth year: $59,000
  • Fifth year: $58,000
  • Sixth year: $62,000
  • Seventh year: $62,000
  • Eighth year: $66,000
