Out of 801 occupations, surgeons and anesthesiologists receive the most pay, according to an analysis of federal compensation data by The Business Journals.
Surgeons ranked first, earning an average of $219,770 in 2009, the latest year for which figures are available from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Anesthesiologists came in second, earning an average of $211,750.
No occupation outside healthcare appeared until ninth place. Oral surgeons ranked in third, earning an average of $210,710; orthodontists ranked fourth with an average of $206,190; and obstetricians ranked fifth, earning an average of $204,470.
