The boom in physician interest in business degrees stems from a realization that “healthcare is a business,” according to Mark V. Pauly, PhD, professor at University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. Physicians, with their background in medicine, can bring a fresh and inside perspective on healthcare quality issues that can affect business.

According to Barry Silbaugh, CEO of the American College of Physician Executives, an increasing number of healthcare start-ups are being run by physicians and most of the ACPE’s members serve as medical directors or CMOs of hospitals and health insurance companies.
