Of the three main corporate healthcare sectors — hospital, long-term care and home health — the top human resource executive has the highest average salary at hospitals, according to a survey from Hospital & Healthcare Compensation Service.

From 2001 to 2011, the prevalence of long-term incentive plans for non-profit hospital CEOs increased from 39 percent of organizations to 45 percent, according to a report from healthcare compensation firm Integrated Healthcare Strategies.

Michael Tarwater, CEO of Charlotte, N.C.-based Carolinas HealthCare System, earned more than $4.2 million in total compensation in 2011, an increase of more than 13 percent from 2010, according to a Charlotte Observer report.
