According to the report, CEO compensation ranged from $256,000 to $1.2 million at Maine’s six largest hospitals, their parent organizations and other hospitals in the region. Some hospital CEOs made less than in previous years; once the highest-paid hospital CEO in Maine, Central Maine Healthcare leader Peter Chalke saw his pay decrease from $2 million in fiscal year 2006-2007 to $738,000 in calendar year 2008. According to the report, higher pay in previous years may have resulted from an accrual of deferred compensation.
Bonuses also play a role in reported compensation, the report said. St. Mary’s Health System CEO James Cassidy received a $109,000 bonus in 2008-09, doubling his compensation to $1 million. Bonuses for Maine healthcare CEOs ranged from under $100,000 to $306,000, earned by Mr. Caron.
