Highest-paid regions for NPs, PAs

The total amount of cash compensation paid to physician assistants and nurse practitioners can vary significantly by region, according to a survey released Dec. 7 by consulting firm SullivanCotter.

The “2022 Advanced Practice Provider Compensation and Productivity Survey” examines advanced practice provider median total cash compensation, which includes base pay plus performance incentives. It is based on data for nearly 700 organizations, including hospitals, health systems, medical groups and academic medical centers, representing more than 100,000 individual advanced practice providers. The 2022 data reflects total cash compensation from Jan. 1, 2021, to Dec. 31, 2021. 

Here is a breakdown of median total cash compensation for nurse practitioners and physician assistants, by region and in descending order, according to survey data shared with Becker’s: 

Nurse practitioners

West: $143,513

Northeast: $132,042

Southeast: $120,640

North Central: $119,701

Great Lakes Subregion: $119,413

Physician assistants

West: $147,610

Northeast: $128,826

Southeast: $125,008

North Central: $122,387

Great Lakes Subregion: $122,099
