U.S. physicians in the West and Pacific region are the most likely to receive on-call pay among eight U.S. regions, according to a Sept. 5 report from Marit Health, which collects anonymous salary data in medicine.
In the West and Pacific and Rocky Mountain regions, 34% and 33% of physicians, respectively, reported receiving on-call pay. This compares to just 16% of physicians in the Mid-Atlantic region.
On-call pay also varies by physician specialty, with orthopedic surgeons being most likely to receive call pay and neurosurgeons receiving the highest average on-call compensation.
The analysis drew from 8,385 full-time physician salaries submitted between September 2024 and Sept. 5, 2025. Of these, 6,138 physicians reported taking call, Marit Health confirmed to Becker’s.
