Roughly 20 nurses at Alta Bates Summit Medical Centers in Oakland and Berkeley, Calif., earned between $200,000 and $291,000 last year, according to the report. Of the highest-paid nurses, five received more than $100,000 each to be on call.
Twenty of the top executives at Sutter Health received significantly higher salaries, earning more than $1 million each in 2009. According to the report, CEO Pat Fry topped the list at roughly $4 million in total compensation.
However, the nurses’ union said the strike was not about their wages — it was about their benefits and cuts in patient services, the report said.
