Detroit's Beaumont Hospitals to Give Bonuses to 17K Employees, Lay Off 50

Beaumont Hospitals in Detroit will pay bonuses to 17,400 employees while laying off 50 administrators and managers, according to various reports.

The hospital system will pay its full-time workers hired before July 1 $750 each in bonus checks, marking the first time Beaumont Hospitals has distributed bonuses in at least 20 years, according to a Chicago Tribune report.

Part-time workers will receive a prorated check based on the number of hours they work per week, according to the report.

At the same time, Beaumont is laying off 40-50 administrators and managers, part of a reorganization effort expected to save the hospital system up to $4 million a year, according to a Detroit News report.

Beaumont Hospitals laid off hundreds of workers in 2008 and 2009, following a $29.5 million operating loss in 2008.
