Here are three things to know about Mr. Bertolini’s compensation.
1. Mr. Bertolini’s base salary was $1.2 million in 2017. Aetna reported its CEO had an annual total compensation of $18.8 million. Compared to a median employee’s average annual salary, $79,720, Aetna determined Mr. Bertolini’s pay ratio to a median employee’s was about 235 to 1.
2. However, when including exercised options and stock of $40.6 million and $14.3 million, respectively; a cash bonus of about $2.1 million; and almost $500,000 toward using the company’s private jet and retirement, Mr. Bertolini’s compensation neared $59 million in 2017.
3. According to Aetna’s proxy statement, the company grew its stock price 45 percent from $124.01 on Dec. 30, 2016, to $180.39 on Dec. 29, 2017. The results may be the last full-year numbers for Aetna as a standalone insurer, as the company eyes a $69 billion deal with CVS Health.
