Becker’s Healthcare aims to foster peer-to-peer conversation between healthcare’s brightest leaders and thinkers. In that vein, responses to our Speaker Series are published straight from interviewees. Here is what our speakers had to say.

Question: What is the smartest thing you’ve done in the last year to set your system up for success?

Lawrence Antonucci: Engaging our senior leadership and board in a three- to five-year strategic planning process. Narrowing our focus around a few things that we must do to succeed in the dynamic environment that is healthcare.

Q: What are you most excited about and nervous about?

LA: Building a delivery system around value-based care. We have been working on the pieces of the system for a number of years. It’s time to focus on putting the pieces together in a coordinated, seamless delivery system.

Q: How are you thinking about growth and investments for the next year or two?

LA: We continue to invest in the shift from inpatient to outpatient and post-acute care. Having said that, we have committed to the replacement of one of our aging acute care campuses.

Q: What will healthcare executives need to be effective leaders for the next five years?

LA: I’ve just read a book called CEO Excellence. It’s an excellent treatise on the mindsets that separate great CEOs from the rest.

Q: How are you building resilient and diverse teams?

LA: We have made the commitment to inclusion by recruiting a chief equity and inclusion officer who will sit at the senior leadership table and have broad reach throughout the system and the community. We have worked very intentionally on resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic by establishing respite programs for staff and support throughout the organization.
