The neuro ICU, which is scheduled to open Feb. 22, is part of a larger effort by Akron General Health System to improve care for strokes, brain cancer and neurological disorders. The health system is spending more than $3 million on equipment to perform minimally invasive procedures for neurological patients and $500,000 on a portable CT scanner for the neuro ICU.

James Gebel Jr., MD, who joined Akron General from the Cleveland Clinic, will serve as medical director of the unit and the hospital’s stroke program.
