'Smart thermometer' designed to help stop spread of disease at 2016 Olympics

San Franciso-based Kinsa has developed a thermometer that allows users to log their symptoms and reach out to members in the community and physicians for medical guidance, according to a Business Insider report.

If the Smart Stick Thermometer senses a high temperature, it provides the user with basic medical advice and cites recommended doses for certain types of medication. Users can manually enter symptoms and photos to track the illness's progression.

The device also functions as a communication tool, allowing users to receive and advise other users in similar situations. Kinsa CEO Inder Singh said the company's goal was to understand where and at what rate illnesses spread in particular areas.

The company donated thermometers to athletes planning to participate in the Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil this month. Those with the devices will be able to monitor the symptoms and illnesses being reported in the Olympic Village.
