ProMedica opens full-service grocery store in food desert

Toledo, Ohio-based ProMedica opened a full-service grocery store Dec. 9, called Market on the Green, to provide fresh and affordable healthy food choices to the residents of a designated food desert in Toledo’s UpTown neighborhood.

The market offers fresh meat, produce, dairy products, baked goods, frozen foods and other personal necessities, such as toiletries — many of which are locally sources to support local businesses.

Market on the Green is located in a facility donated to ProMedica by the city. The market is part of The ProMedica Ebeid Institute, a center established to address the social determinants of health in Toledo with a $1.5 million gift from philanthropist Russell Ebeid. In 2016, additional floors in the Institute will be renovated to house education classes, health screenings and programs for financial literacy and job training.
