Ohio hospital begins phased reopening after smoke evacuation

OhioHealth Berger Hospital in Circleville began a phased reopening June 19 after being temporarily closed as a precaution when an overheating pump generated smoke in the hospital’s basement, a spokesperson confirmed to Becker’s.

Since the evacuation on June 18, staff and remediation experts have been working to sanitize the facility, return it to normal operations and ensure the safety of patients and employees, according to an updated statement.

The emergency department and inpatient hospital units, including the maternity unit, reopened June 19.

As of June 20, the surgery department is operating in phases, according to the hospital.

Berger is operating on an emergent basis through June 22, with plans to be fully functional and resume normal operations by 7 a.m. EDT June 23.

OhioHealth Berger Hospital is part of Columbus-based OhioHealth, a system with 16 hospitals, three joint-venture hospitals, more than 200 ambulatory sites and other health services across 50 counties. The hospital is providing updates here.
