Trenton, N.J.-based Capital Health has shuttered its satellite emergency department and outpatient clinic in the city due to structural issues.
The two-hospital system on June 4 learned of significant structural problems with an adjoining building that threaten the integrity of its own medical facility. Leaders said the system had “no choice but to cease operations at this location without delay” to ensure the safety of patients, staff and visitors.
The outpatient clinic closed the afternoon of June 4, and the ED stopped accepting patients at 7 a.m. local time on June 5. Capital Health operates two other EDs within its acute care hospitals about two and eight miles away from the shuttered site.
The system assumed operations of the medical facility — previously St. Francis Medical Center — from Livonia, Mich.-based Trinity Health in December 2022.
“We are deeply frustrated and disappointed by the circumstances that have led to the emergency closure of our satellite emergency department and other services at East Trenton. Since assuming services from St. Francis two years ago, and leasing this space from Trinity Health, our staff has worked tirelessly to preserve services in the city and at this location,” Al Maghazehe, PhD, president and CEO of Capital Health, said in a June 4 news release. “With the former St. Francis location no longer safe for us to occupy, we will be working to identify the best path forward to ensure Trentonians, and those in close proximity to this location, have continued access to the care they need. We will work closely with the city, other partners, and the community as we move forward.”
