Detroit-based Henry Ford Health launched a dedicated pediatric ambulance to transport babies and children requiring specialized hospital care.
Four things to know:
1. The ambulance will transport pediatric patients from emergency departments across metro Detroit to Henry Ford St. John Children’s Hospital in Detroit for specialized care, according to a July 13 health system news release shared with Becker’s.
2. It also will support neonatal intensive care teams from Henry Ford Health’s level 3 neonatal intensive care units as they transport newborns requiring advanced care.
3. The unit, which goes into service July 13, is staffed by Medstar paramedics who completed specialty pediatric and neonatal training at the University of Maryland Baltimore Campus. Medstar, Michigan’s largest ambulance provider and co-owned by Henry Ford Health, collaborated with the health system’s pediatrics team to design, build and staff the ambulance.
4. The organizations said they reviewed two years of transport data to develop the program and plan to continue refining the service through ongoing case reviews, clinical collaboration and protocol development.
