WVU Medicine plans $350M in capital projects

Morgantown, W.Va.-based WVU Medicine’s board of directors has approved more than $350 million in capital projects.

The investments, subject to regulatory approval, bring the system’s three-year total for capital improvement projects to more than $1.2 billion, according to an April 15 health system news release.

Here are the approved projects, according to the release:

  • A $135 million investment will fund a new patient tower at Camden Clark Medical Center in Parkersburg, W.Va., that will increase inpatient bed capacity from 260 to 300. It includes four additional surgical suites and a proposed women’s and children’s floor. It is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2029.
  • A $68.1 million investment at Fairmont Medical Center in Fairmont, W.Va., will go toward the third phase of its expansion, including the demolition of structures more than 80 years old on the campus. It will be replaced by a new three-story building with an outpatient clinic. It is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2028.
  • A $56 million community hospital will be built in St. Clairsville, Ohio, including inpatient beds, an emergency department and outpatient imaging and laboratory services. It is slated for completion in 2027.
  • A $25.5 million investment will build a 50,636-square-foot medical office building at Princeton (W.Va.) Community Hospital, consolidating seven physician practices and outpatient therapies. It is expected to be completed in June 2028.
  • A $20.1 million investment will fund a new 17,000-square-foot cancer center at Weirton (W.Va.) Medical Center, expanding radiation oncology and chemotherapy infusion services. It is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2029.
  • An $18.5 million investment will support the relocation and expansion of outpatient behavioral health services at WVU Hospitals in Morgantown, W.Va. It will move multiple clinic sites to a new location. Completion is slated for the third quarter of 2027.
  • A $15 million investment will build a 21,000-square-foot radiation oncology center at Garrett Regional Medical Center in Oakland, Md., including new imaging and clinical space. It is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2029.
  • An $8.7 million investment will renovate a 14-bed surgical intensive care unit at Thomas Hospitals in Charleston, W.Va., increasing capacity for complex cases. It is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2027.
  • A $4 million investment will relocate and upgrade nuclear medicine services at Thomas Hospitals to improve patient throughput and access. It is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2027.
  • A $2.5 million investment will develop an orthopedic and podiatry suite at Potomac Valley Hospital in Keyser, W.Va., including exam rooms and imaging capabilities. It is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2026.
