Charlottesville, Va.-based UVA Health has acquired a former State Farm operations center in nearby Albemarle County for $37.7 million.
The health system plans to use the roughly 365,000-square-foot building for outpatient care and is aiming to open it in 2028, according to an Oct. 30 news release.
UVA Health projects 1.2 million outpatient visits a year in the Charlottesville area by 2035, about 300,000 more than it has now. The purchase of the 55-acre property is one of the first major moves under the system’s 10-year space planning initiative, “Expanding Care, Enhancing Lives.”
“The State Farm building will help us meet the demand for our world-class care in an easy-to-reach location while also freeing up additional space at University Hospital to expand our inpatient care,” UVA Health CEO Mitchell Rosner, MD, said in the release.
Over the next six months, UVA Health will decide which clinical services will move to the site and what renovations they will need.
The system is also adding inpatient capacity at University Hospital, where average occupancy was 91% in 2026. Crews are building out the top three floors of the South Tower, and planning is underway to convert the Transitional Care Hospital into inpatient behavioral health rooms. Together, they are expected to add 137 beds over the next three years.
