UC San Francisco has received a $100 million commitment to support health system capital projects, cancer research and innovation initiatives.
Four things to know:
1. The gift includes $50 million for capital projects, $40 million for innovation initiatives and $10 million for the Weill Cancer Hub West, a collaboration between UCSF and Stanford (Calif.) Medicine focused on cancer research and treatment, according to a May 7 UCSF news release.
2. The funding will support modernization efforts at the Parnassus Heights campus, including a new UCSF Health Helen Diller Hospital in San Francisco and a new hospital building at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland (Calif.). The Oakland project will add 104 inpatient beds, including a 20-bed inpatient behavioral health unit.
3. The donation comes from longtime supporters Kathy Chiao and Kenneth Hao. It follows a separate $75 million contribution from the couple to the UC Davis (Calif.) Weill School of Veterinary Medicine announced April 23.
4. UCSF said the family also provided $5 million in 2025 to support development of a real-time artificial intelligence monitoring platform for clinical care known as Impact Monitoring Platform for AI in Clinical Care.
