Sutter Health to develop $442M outpatient care complex

Sacramento, Calif.-based Sutter Health has shared plans to build a $442 million advanced neurological and neurosurgical care center next to its CPMC Mission Bernal Campus in San Francisco.

The five-story, 129,000-square-foot Mission Bernal Care Complex will open to patients in 2028 and be located on the former St. Luke's Hospital site. It will provide neurology and neurosurgery services, along with lab, infusion, rehabilitation, imaging, and an onsite ambulatory surgery center, according to a news release shared with Becker's

Sutter's Ray Dolby Brain Health Center and Forbes Norris MDA/ALS Research and Treatment Center will both be housed in the new complex.

"Patients will be able to come to this location and visit their specialist, receive diagnostic lab and imaging, as well as outpatient procedures all in one complex," Christina Oh, president of Sutter's greater San Francisco market, said in the release.

Two neurological intervention suites will be added by 2027 to the CPMC Mission Bernal Campus hospital as part of Sutter's growth plans. The suites will offer advanced imaging, prompt stroke detection, and minimally invasive treatment for life-threatening aneurysms, blood clots, or blockages in the brain.

Sutter also plans to open 25 ambulatory care centers by 2027 and over 160 hospital beds by 2025.

"Being able to provide more primary care access is key to our future success and our goal is to grow from 40 primary care providers in San Francisco today to 100 by 2030," Rob Nordgren, MD, chief medical officer of Sutter's greater San Francisco market, said in the release.

Sutter Health is a nonprofit health system that comprises more than 57,000 employees and 12,000 affiliated providers at its multiple hospitals, medical groups, urgent care clinics, telehealth, ambulatory surgery centers, and home health and hospital services.
