St. Louis-based SSM Health’s foundation will create a new community health impact fund focused on housing and food insecurity with a $10 million investment.
Five things to know:
1. SSM Health Foundation–St. Louis launched the SSM Health–St. Louis Community Health Impact Fund with the $10 million investment from Carolyn Kindle, CEO and owner of St. Louis City Soccer Club, president of Enterprise Mobility Foundation and an SSM Health board member, according to a June 1 health system news release shared with Becker’s.
2. The fund is designed to improve the health and well-being of SSM Health patients and the communities it serves by strengthening partnerships across St. Louis and addressing social factors that influence health outcomes.
3. The fund will support initiatives focused on food insecurity, housing and transportation. SSM Health’s Bread Basket Program, which partners with the St. Louis Area Foodbank, will continue through the fund. The program served 3,276 patients in 2025.
4. Medical respite will be added as the fund’s next initiative. The program provides a safe place for patients experiencing homelessness to recover after hospitalization and includes a 24/7 staffed environment, meals, transportation to medical appointments, case management, peer support and housing navigation.
5. SSM Health said it will initially partner with Haven Recovery Homes and LIV Sober Living to expand Medical respite programming, with additional initiatives to be established over time.
