The Venice City Council unanimously approved Sarasota Memorial’s request to allow a hospital and related health facility to be built on the site that was initially zoned for a shopping center.
The project, expected to take two and a half years, will cost $437 million. The initial development will be on 48 acres of the site.
The project includes a five-story, 365,000-square-foot hospital with 110 private rooms and a 28-bed emergency department. A two-story, 60,000 square-foot medical office building, additional support structures and a parking garage also are planned.
The facility is expected to employ 500 people when it opens.
