However, the AMA, AHA and the hospital community still favor the Democrats and the pharmaceutical companies are “sitting on their wallets,” according to an analysis by the Center for Responsive Politics, based on required reporting for the period through June.
The insurance industry, now at loggerheads with the administration over the new law, donated $543,840 to Republicans, compared with $353,870 to Democrats. And AdvaMed, the trade group representing medical device-makers, said a key aim is to repeal or pare back the device excise tax before it takes effect in 2013.
Health professionals, presumably led by physicians, were the most generous group of supporters of the Tea Party Caucus, donating just over $2.7 million. AMA’s PAC, however, donated $52,000 to Democrats, compared with $42,850 to Republicans.
While the American Hospital Association continues to spend more on Democrats, an AHA official said: “That doesn’t mean we haven’t given what is a substantial amount to many Republican candidates.”
