Hawaii system to build new hospital

Honolulu-based The Queens Health Systems plans to build an 80-bed hospital in Kailua-Kona, a move that aims to improve access to care for rural populations on Hawai‘i Island.

The facility will provide inpatient and emergency care, and features a heli-pad to support inter-island transfers, according to a Dec. 16 news release. Adjacent to the construction site is a housing development, which Queen’s plans to use as part of an affordable housing program to attract and retain employees.

The new hospital is part of Queens’ broader, seven-year plan to develop a hub of outpatient and specialty care services in the western and northern regions of the island. In the coming years, the system plans to expand healthcare services in Kona to include skilled nursing, post-acute care and urgent care facilities. Additionally, Queen’s is constructing a 40,000-square-foot outpatient cancer center at its North Hawai‘i Community Hospital. The center will provide oncology services, cardiac care and chronic disease management.

In October, Queens acquired a behavioral health hospital from San Francisco-based Sutter Health.
