Bellaire, Texas-based Harris Health expects to finish building its $1.6 billion Northeast Houston Hospital by early 2029, a spokesperson confirmed to Becker’s.
“Construction crews have already completed the elevated foundation and are well into construction of the first few levels of the 12-story building,” the health system said in a media advisory shared with Becker’s. “A major completed project is the flood mitigation system — six underground water tanks capable of holding up to 7.5 million gallons of rainwater to reduce the chances of flooding. By storing the water, it allows staff to gradually release it into the city/county storm sewers as the weather clears.”
The update comes about one year after the health system broke ground on the Harris Health Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital campus in Houston.
The new $1.6 billion level 1 trauma hospital, which will replace the existing LBJ hospital, will comprise 390 private rooms with capacity to add 60 more, as well as operating rooms, a helipad and a hybrid operating room, according to a previous news release from the health system.
The hospital is part of the $2.5 billion bond package approved by voters in 2023.
