Dallas-based Baylor Scott & White Health plans to open four new small-format emergency hospitals across North Texas over the next two years as part of a broader strategy to expand access to care in underserved areas.
The new facilities — one planned in Dallas, one in Aledo and two in Fort Worth — will bring emergency care closer to communities where long commutes can delay time-sensitive treatment, according to the health system. Baylor Scott & White is jointly developing the sites with Emerus Holdings, a Houston-based operator of neighborhood hospitals.
The hospitals will join eight other Baylor Scott & White emergency hospital locations across the region. Baylor Scott & White Health said the expansion reflects its focus on providing more localized, convenient care, complementing its growing network of urgent care centers and digital navigation tools.
The system also operates 41 urgent care facilities through a joint venture with NextCare Urgent Care.
“We know navigating the healthcare system, especially in urgent situations, is one of the greatest pain points for our customers,” Rob Watson, MD, chief clinical operations officer for the health system, said in a news release. “As critical to growing in-person and virtual care options is our ability to offer personalized navigation, helping patients and families make informed decisions on where to seek care.”
Baylor Scott & White Health — the largest nonprofit health system in Texas — comprises 52 acute-care hospitals and is coming off the back of a strong financial year, which is helping fuel its expansion strategy for 2026 and beyond.
The system reported an operating income of $1.7 billion (10% margin) in the fiscal year ending June 30, 2025, up more than 41% from the $1.2 billion gain (7.9% margin) posted in the previous year. Total revenue rose 11.6% year over year to $17.3 billion.
