Charlotte, N.C.-based Atrium Health’s proposal for Atrium Health Fort Mill in South Carolina, a planned $450 million hospital campus, has been approved.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Hospital Authority Board of Commissioners unanimously approved the proposal at its quarterly meeting Dec. 2, a system spokesperson told Becker’s.

The project will include a 200,000-square-foot, 60-bed hospital with four operating rooms and 15 emergency bays, as well as a 73,000-square-foot medical office building offering inpatient, outpatient, emergency and ancillary services.

“Atrium Health has recognized a need for additional access to emergency and high-acuity care in South Carolina for some time, which has been reinforced by the fact that a high percentage of our patients at Atrium Health Pineville are residents of South Carolina,” the spokesperson said in a Dec. 2 statement. “We’ve seen how York County’s population has surged nearly 1.6% since 2024, reflecting the region’s rapid growth and healthcare needs in the past year alone.”

Site preparation will begin in 2026, with services expected to be offered by mid-2029.

“To continue meeting the evolving and growing needs of our communities, we must grow alongside them,” the spokesperson added. “Atrium Health is investing in York County by increasing access to care with a promise to continue delivering exceptional, comprehensive care for our patients, our families and friends close to home.”
