The funding for the project will largely come from the county and the state over 20 to 30 years. Proposed renovations of the 34-acre campus include housing rental space, a public library, a preschool, commercial venture space and open space.
The rental and commercial space will help generate new revenue streams for Hawaii Health Systems Corp., the state agency that operates the hospital.
Samuel Mahelona Memorial was originally built in 1917 as a tuberculosis hospital and has now been repurposed as a long-term care and behavioral health hospital.
