The system had planned to move 154 beds from Mitchell Hospital to create office space and add 43 beds to its new Center for Care and Discovery. Its request was initially denied due to reports from staff members that the system had no need for more beds, because bed space was being used inefficiently.
An appeal letter sent to the review board in late July said the extra beds would reduce emergency department crowding and ambulance diversions. It is unclear what reversed the board’s decision when they considered the appeal, according to the report.
