'Women are devalued and demeaned' at Nike, lawsuit claims

Two female former Nike employees have filed a lawsuit alleging systematic gender discrimination at the company, according to CNN Money.

In their lawsuit, Kelly Cahill and Sara Johnston claim they were paid less than their male colleagues and did not receive promotions due to their gender. The women want to receive reinstatement at Nike, back pay, as well as for the company to institute equal employment policies.

"At Nike, the numbers tell a story of a company where women are devalued and demeaned," the lawsuit says, according to CNN Money. "For many women at Nike, the company hierarchy is an unclimbable pyramid."

In March, Nike CEO Mark Parker sent a memo to employees apologizing for how the company handled reports of workplace misconduct. In July, Nike gave raises to 7,400 employees in an effort to promote pay equity.

"Nike opposes discrimination of any type and has a long-standing commitment to diversity and inclusion," said Sandra Carreon-John, a Nikes spokesperson. "We are committed to competitive pay and benefits for our employees. The vast majority of Nike employees live by our values of dignity and respect for others."
