Elon Musk leaves AI research group he co-founded to avoid conflicts of interest

Tesla CEO Elon Musk plans to step down from his post as chairman of the board of OpenAI, a nonprofit artificial intelligence research company he co-founded in 2015.

Mr. Musk will leave the position to eliminate any potential conflicts of interest between OpenAI and Tesla, according to a Feb. 20 OpenAI blog post.

"Elon Musk will depart the OpenAI Board but will continue to donate and advise the organization," the blog post reads. "As Tesla continues to become more focused on AI, this will eliminate a potential future conflict for Elon."

The blog post, titled "OpenAI Supporters," discussed new donors and advisors who have joined the company. It also detailed next steps for OpenAI, which recently applied its AI research efforts to beat professional human players at the video game Dota 2.

"We're broadening our base of funders to prepare for the next phase of OpenAI, which will involve ramping up our investments in our people and the compute resources necessary to make consequential breakthroughs in artificial intelligence," the blog post reads.

Mr. Musk has been vocal about his concerns regarding AI. In July, he suggested the technology would result in job losses as robots "will be able to do everything better than us," and in August he referred to AI as carrying "vastly more risk than North Korea."
