Apple's offer to replace batteries could hurt 2018 iPhone sales

Apple's 2018 iPhone sales may take a hit after the company cut replacement costs for failing batteries, Reuters reports citing Barclays analysts.

After reports surfaced Apple intentionally slowed down older iPhones with weakening batteries, the company slashed the battery replacement price for the iPhone 6 and later models from $79 to $29.

Should iPhone users opt to replace batteries rather than upgrade to a new device, Barclays predicts Apple's iPhone sales could face headwinds in 2018.

Mark Moskowitz, a Barclays analyst, said 77 percent of iPhone users have a 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, 7, 7 Plus or SE model. Even a small portion of iPhone users choosing to replace their device batteries over an upgrade may affect sales, he speculated.
