Salt Lake City-based Intermountain Children’s Health and Intermountain Primary Children’s Hospital have joined a national network focused on trauma and bereavement care.

The designation is part of an initiative led by the Trauma and Grief Center at the Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute in Dallas that aims to standardize best-practice treatments for children experiencing trauma and loss, the system said in a March 31 news release. The center also provides training, consultation and technical assistance to network members for assessment and intervention.

Intermountain’s participation includes its Primary Children’s Hospital campuses in Salt Lake City, Lehi and Taylorsville, Utah. Other network members are in Michigan, Louisiana and Texas.

The effort comes as bereavement remains a significant issue, with approximately 1 in 15 children in Utah experiencing the death of a parent or sibling by age 18, the release said.

Intermountain Primary Children’s Center for Safe and Healthy Families, an integrated medical and behavioral health clinic, has also trained more than 1,000 therapists in trauma-focused treatments across its system and region.

The health system said the designation builds on work developing care models for pediatric traumatic stress, including screening during well-being visits and connecting patients to behavioral health services.
