Cigna, Northwestern Medicine ink collaborative care deal

Cigna and Chicago-based Northwestern Medicine Physician Partners today announced the launch of a collaborative care initiative similar to an accountable care organization.

The initiative aims to improve healthcare access and care coordination for more than 5,600 Cigna beneficiaries who are treated by NMPP physicians. The initiative seeks to improve the health of these patients, provide more affordable care and improve the patient experience. NMPP nurse clinical care coordinators will help patients navigate the system, with the help of a team of case managers from Cigna.

If NMPP meets quality and cost targets, the 550-physician group will have the opportunity to receive value-based incentives.

This agreement will be Cigna's fourth in the Chicago area, and the 122nd nationwide.

Correction: A previous version of this article incorrectly stated that Cigna had 112 collaborative care agreements nationwide. It has 122 nationwide. We regret this error.
