Baton Rouge, La.-based Louisiana State University and FMOL Health — Our Lady of the Lake have awarded more than $1.6 million in competitive research grants to seven teams through a collaborative program that targets health challenges in Louisiana such as cancer, trauma, heart disease and sports medicine, according to a news release shared with Becker’s.
The release said the grants range from roughly $208,000 to $250,000 per team and span research into heat illness prediction in high school football players, breast cancer prevention, trauma care protocols, obesity-related metabolic disease, adolescent sports retention, salivary biomarkers for concussion detection and social determinants of chronic disease.
Among the funded projects is a study testing a non-hormone path to breast cancer prevention led by Qiang Shen, MD, PhD, professor of interdisciplinary oncology at LSU Health New Orleans and director of the translational oncology program at the LSU-LCMC Health Cancer Center.
Another project, led by Cory Coehoorn, PhD, director of the rehabilitation science program and associate professor of rehabilitation science and family medicine at LSU Health Shreveport (La.), will investigate salivary biomarkers for concussion detection in college football players as a less invasive alternative to blood-based tests.
The collaborative program is part of LSU and FMOL Health’s a broader, long-term initiative combining both organizations’ resources to address health disparities across Louisiana and the Gulf South.
