Reginald Munden, MD, DMD, will step down as chair of the Department of Radiology at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston at the end of December 2026.
Madelene Lewis, MD, will succeed him as department chair effective Jan. 1, 2027.
Dr. Munden has led MUSC’s radiology department for 5 1/2 years. Before joining MUSC, he spent 13 years chairing radiology departments at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, Houston Methodist Hospital and Research Institute, and Wake Forest School of Medicine.
His clinical and research work has centered on lung cancer screening, lung cancer staging and treatment response to therapy. He has served as principal investigator, co-principal investigator and senior investigator on multiple funded research studies and clinical trials in the field.
Dr. Munden currently serves as vice president of the American Roentgen Ray Society and sits on the American College of Radiology’s Board of Chancellors. He previously served as treasurer of the Board of Trustees of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) Research and Education Foundation.
The leadership transition places Dr. Lewis, a breast imaging specialist within MUSC’s radiology department, at the head of one of the university’s core clinical and academic departments as it continues its focus on oncologic imaging and physician-led research.
