5 states with the highest, lowest employer health plan premiums in 2016

The national average annual premium for individual coverage under employer health plans was $6,101 in 2016, according to SHADAC, a health policy research center affiliated with Minneapolis-based University of Minnesota School of Public Health.

The report, “State-Level Trends in Employer-Sponsored Health Insurance, 2012–2016,” analyzed Medical Expenditure Panel Survey-Insurance Component weighted estimates. MEPS-IC estimates use the Census Bureau’s Business Register in its weighting process.

Here are five states with the highest average annual premiums in 2016.

  1. Alaska — $7,886
  2. Rhode Island — $6,665
  3. New Hampshire — $6,637
  4. Massachusetts — $6,621
  5. New York — $6,614

Here are five states with the lowest average annual premiums in 2016.

  1. Arkansas — $5,341
  2. Nevada — $5,490
  3. Alabama — $5,536
  4. Tennessee — $5,543
  5. Idaho — $5,594
