3 ways to be assertive, not pushy, when addressing a conflict

Sometimes it is necessary to be assertive at work, but you must be careful when dealing with colleagues who may interpret your assertive nature as pushiness, according to the Harvard Business Review.

Listed below are three techniques to speak confidently and assertively without offending coworkers when resolving a conflict.

1. Begin with short objective statements about your coworker’s behavior and what you want them to change, without being too emotionally charged. Letting emotions get the best of you will cloud your points.

2. Describe how their behavior negatively affects you and clearly outline the cause-and-effect logic of their actions.

3. End with a feelings statement that doesn’t just show this has had an objective effect on your work, but that their behavior has hurt your feelings.
