Founded as a 10-bed hospital in 1897, Mount Desert Island Hospital has since transformed into an award-winning 25-bed critical access hospital with nine regional health centers and a retirement community. Maine Emergency Medical Services named Mount Desert Island Trauma System Hospital of the Year in 2016, the same year Healthgrades recognized the hospital with the Outstanding Patient Experience Award. iVantage Health Analytics and the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health honored Mount Desert Island with the National Rural Health Day Performance Leadership Award in 2015.
