In 2007, three divisions at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center — cardiovascular medicine, cardiac surgery and vascular and endovascular surgery — joined forces to form the interdisciplinary CardioVascular Institute. In addition to the three aforementioned divisions, BIDMC also offers an advanced heart failure program, an outpatient cardiovascular clinic and a vascular medicine program. The hospital also plays a role in heart health history: in 1952, Paul Zoll, MD, a cardiologist at Beth Israel, developed the first pacemaker used in a human. BIDMC is ranked among the four best hospitals in Boston and is recognized as high-performing in cardiology and heart surgery in 2014-15 by U.S. News & World Report. Additionally, it has been named among the 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals in America for the past two years. BIDMC is also designated as a Blue Distinction Center+.
