The first orthopedic surgeon in Dallas began practicing at Baylor in the early 1900s. Today, nearly 9,000 orthopedic surgeries — including 3,000 joint replacements — are performed at Baylor facilities each year. Not only does Baylor University Medical Center perform a great number of orthopedic procedures, but the hospital has also been recognized for the high quality of care it offers its patients. Baylor University Medical Center was ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of the nation's top 50 hospitals for orthopedic care in its 2014-15 rankings. In addition, the hospital is a Blue Cross Blue Shield Distinction Center for spine surgery and hip and knee replacements and has received Magnet recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing Center for nursing excellence.
