The Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute at Northwestern Memorial Hospital launched in 2005 after a Valentine’s Day gift of $10 million from philanthropist Neil G. Bluhm. Since then the institute has more than tripled the number of cardiac surgery cases performed at Northwestern, becoming a regional destination for advanced cardiovascular care. Northwestern Memorial Hospital was ranked No. 6 nationally for cardiology and heart surgery and listed as the top heart program in Illinois for the 9th year in a row, according to U.S. News & World Report's 2016-17 rankings. The Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute was listed as high-performing for heart failure, bypass and aortic valve surgery by U.S. News & World Report and is designated as a Blue Distinction Center + for Cardiac Care.
