Abbott Northwestern Hospital (Minneapolis). As the largest hospital in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Abbott Northwestern Hospital — part of Minneapolis-based Allina Health — serves more than 200,000 patients and families from across the Upper Midwest each year. The hospital originated in 1882 as Northwestern Hospital in a small rented house, and in 1877 Northwestern Hospital built its first structure specifically for hospital use. Today, Abbot Northwestern — a 631-bed teaching facility with a 1,433-member medical staff — is ranked No. 1 in Minneapolis and No. 2 in Minnesota by U.S. News & World Report’s2014-15 rankings.

NorthwesternHospital’s current size is the result of numerous affiliations and mergers since its formation. The Abbot name in Abbot Northwestern comes from Dr. Amos Abbott, who was a consulting physician to Northwestern’s first medical staff. Twenty years after joining the hospital in 1902 and less than a mile away, Dr. Abbott left to open AbbottHospital for Women. In 1970, Abbott and NorthwesternHospitals were merged into Abbott-NorthwesternHospital and in 1980 consolidated into one building.

Abbott Northwestern is consistently recognized for its expertise and care. It is nationally ranked in four areas by U.S. News & World Report, including cardiology and heart surgery, geriatrics, gynecology and orthopedics. The hospital has received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With the Guidelines Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award and is Magnet-accredited for excellence in nursing.
