How many healthcare workers got their flu shot last year?

Experts recommend that all healthcare personnel receive a flu shot every year, and during the 2014-2015 flu season, 77.3 percent of healthcare workers heeded that advice, according to survey results from the CDC.

That amount is similar to the 2013-14 season, when 75.2 percent of healthcare personnel reported getting a flu vaccine.

The CDC conducted an opt-in survey from March 31 through April 15 and gathered responses from 1,914 healthcare workers.

The following is a breakdown of findings from that survey.

  • Vaccination coverage was highest among healthcare workers in hospitals (90.4 percent)
  • Vaccination coverage was lowest for healthcare workers in long-term care settings (63.9 percent)
  • When an employer required vaccination, coverage was at 96 percent
  • When an employer did not require vaccination, coverage was higher in settings where vaccinations were offered for free for one day (73.6 percent) or multiple days (83.9 percent)
  • Coverage was lowest when flu shots were not required, promoted or offered on-site (44 percent)
