Water leak at Va. medical center causes surgery cancellations

After a water leak occurred Jan. 10 at UVA Health System's Culpeper (Va.) Medical Center, the hospital cancelled surgeries and redirected emergency patients to other hospitals in the area, according to Fredericksburg.com.

Officials discovered the leak Sunday morning around 10:00 a.m., and it flooded the mechanical area of the hospital's basement, according to the Culpeper Star-Exponent.

The hospital called the Culpeper County Volunteer Fire Department to pump out the excess water. Fire Department Assistant Chief Charles Perryman said the leak may have been due to a faulty pipe, but an exact cause has not been announced.

Surgeries scheduled for Sunday were cancelled, and patients in need of emergency care were sent to other local hospitals. The hospital re-opened around 3:00 a.m. this morning, according to hospital spokeswoman Mary Kay Campbell.
