House subcommittees pass 2 bills affecting global health funding: 5 things to know

The House Committee on Appropriations approved legislation determining funding for global health programs under the CDC and National Institutes of Health July 19, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation analysis.

Here are five things to know.

1. The House Committee on Appropriations passed the fiscal year 2018 State and Foreign Operations and the fiscal year 2018 Labor, Health and Human Services appropriations bills.

2. The SFOPs legislation contains funding for U.S. global health programs at the State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development, which represents the majority of global health assistance, the report states.

3. The committee approved $8.3 billion in funding for State Department and USAID global health programs, a $404 million decrease from fiscal year 2017. The approved amount is $1.8 billon more than President Donald Trump requested.

4. The LHHS appropriations bill determines funding for CDC and NIH global health initiatives.

5. Under the LHHS legislation, CDC funding for 2018 global health programs was the same as last year at $435.1 million. This is $85.1 million more than President Trump requested. NIH received $73.4 million for its global health efforts, a slight uptick from $72.5 million last year. The NIH's global health center, the Fogarty International Center, was omitted from the fiscal year 2018 proposal.
